What is a “Rethinker? A rethinker is one who questions, doubts (as far as possible), all things. A rethinker seeks questions, not answers, as the path to truth. A rethinker does not blindly follow authority, no matter how firmly established. Hence, a rethinker.

What is a Rethinker? (Part 2)

Being a rethinker does not come naturally. One becomes a rethinker usually from catalysts of circumstances, sets of experiences, or deep disillusionment. And the rethinker views disillusionment as a positive experience. Most people think of disillusionment with angst. But is it not a moment when the false illusion is realized, the un-true is exposed, and the opportunity for knowing a bit more of truth or reality becomes possible? Yet, what often is the response of the disillusioned individual? Disappointment, despair, even depression? Instead of gladness that a falsehood has been discovered, do we not tend to blame others and ourselves for being believers? And rather than using disillusionment as an opportunity to discover truth, do we most often go about building another illusion when something else begs our belief? But a rethinker realizes that truth must be sought among much illusion masquarading as truth. Therefore, with each illusion destroyed comes a beam of light leading to what is real. It is difficult, then, to imagine a rethinker as an adherant to any traditional belief system. A rethinker is not a believer, but a skeptic. If someone were to say, "I believe...", the rethinker would ask, "Why?" The rethinker never arrives. The journey for truth is continual along a path of questions. Yet, there is contentment in the freedom of thoughts and ideas unhindered by the constraints of formulated belief systems and pseudo-authorities. A rethinker understands that life must be lived within a vast mystery... And is OK with that.
